The topic for the next Sawdust and Shavings session will be ‘Processing logs into turning blanks’. For everyone wondering where to get the wood for your next turning project, this session should be of interest. The meeting will be held at Tom Robinson’s shop on Saturday, May 23rd at 10:00 am (directions will be included in a follow-up email). Attendees will need to bring eye, face, and hearing protection. This will be a hands-on session, but anyone planning on running a chain saw will additionally need long pants, chaps, leather boots, long sleeves, gloves, and a face shield or sawyer helmet. Several chain saws will be available so you do not need to bring your own. Some of our experienced turners will show you how they assess a log to determine how best to cut it into turning blanks. Even if you don’t want to handle a chain saw, just coming to learn how to part out wood should be interesting.
Don’t forget the next monthly meeting on May 12th at 6:30 at Bozeman High School. This will be our last monthly meeting before the summer break. Regular meetings will start up again on September 8th. For everyone wanting to stay active with the club over the summer months, we will be starting our summer shop tours starting on Saturday, June 27th at the home of Rick McCourt. This shop tour will also double as our annual club picnic/potluck, so please plan to bring a side dish or desert (Rick will be providing the main course and beverages). The start time for the shop tour is yet to be announced, but the picnic will start around noon. As the picnic is a social event, friends/family are encouraged to join. Look for more details to follow.
We would like to have additional shop tours for July and August. If you have a shop that can accommodate several people, and you have a technique/idea that you would like to share, please consider hosting a shop tour this summer. Contact one of the club officers to sign up!
